On March 3, the last President of the Republic of Costa Rica (2014-2018) Luis Solis Rivera (photo below, standing third from right) and his family made a visit to Fairchild. As a Distinguished Visiting Professor at FIU’s Kimberly Green Latin American and Caribbean Center (LACC), Prof. Solis is with us during the current academic year. His wife Mercedes Peñas Domingo (photo below, front row first from left) has also a scholar appointment, as a Visiting Researcher at FIU´s Institute of Extreme Events. Prof. Francisco Mora (Director of LACC, photo below, standing second from left) and his family kindly joined us to host Prof. Solis during this visit. The event was jointly arranged by our FIU-Fairchild faculty Dr. Hong Liu (photo below, standing first from right) and Dr. Javier Francisco-Ortega (photo below, standing second from right) with the help of the Garden Director (Dr. Carl Lewis) and the Garden Collection Director (Dr. Brett Jestrow). Prof. Solis represents the long-term commitment of Costa Rica for conservation (50% of the land is officially protected), sustainability, and ecological studies. Costa Rica is a country that has always been considered a major reference regarding policies for effective biological conservation and management.
