Passing of Made Wijaya

Designer of Balinese Gardens

Monday, August 29, 2016

Made Wijaya, the Australian-born designer of fabulous Balinese gardens, has died in Sydney. His gardens in Bali are icons of tropical gardens. He once wrote that Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden was among the two greatest tropical botanical gardens in the world. In 2006, he was among the landscape architects who designed Naples Botanic Garden in an all-day charette. Today that area  is the Asian garden. The Sydney Morning Herald obituary does not give a cause of death or Wijaya’s age. Wijaya was born Michael White, and famously jumped a ship in 1973 for the shores of Bali. Part of his Naples design is shown below.
