A Fabulous Weekend at Fairchild’s International Mango Festival!

Coral Gables, FL, July 14, 2010—Close to 10,000 visitors were in mango mania mode this past weekend, July 10 & 11, as they celebrated the “king of fruit” at Fairchild’s 18th annual International Mango Festival.  “It just goes to show that mangos are truly South Florida’s favorite fruit,” comments Dr. Richard Campbell, Senior Curator of Fairchild’s Tropical Fruit Program. The proceeds from the International Mango Festival help support Fairchild’s Tropical Fruit Program.

At the Mango Cultivar Tasting on Saturday, over a thousand people evaluated 30 cultivars. The results rewarded the Sunset, first place, while Nam Doc Mai came in second. On Sunday, at the famously quirky mango auction, trays of mangos were auctioned off, with a plate of Alphonse going for over $240. “We are so pleased with the community’s wonderful support of this weekend’s event,” said Carl Lewis Director of Fairchild. “Fairchild is so fortunate to have a mango collection that inspires people to learn more about mangos each year.” The 18th International Mango Festival also marked the kick-off of Fairchild’s Bike and $5 incentive with the support of Green Mobility Network.
