The Art of Black and White Digital Photography: Techniques and Tips

Explore Fairchild through the lens of your camera with visions of black and white images dancing in your head. Using a digital camera, interesting black and white photographs can be achieved using in-camera settings and/or Adobe Photoshop. The class will also cover exposure methods to develop mood and dramatic effects, contrast, creative composition, lens selection, and the benefits of shooting in JPEG and RAW. Prerequisite: Must have a digital camera with manual capabilities. Class will take place in the field and a classroom setting.

Orchid Blooms in Watercolors with Hillary Parker

Learn to make your orchid paintings come alive by delving into their mysterious world. Learn the stories behind the pollinators and discover their role in the unique fashion, form, and function of an orchid bloom.

Lotus and Water Lilies in Watercolors with Hillary Parker

Make a splash and delve into the underwater world of aquatic plants found in the ponds at Fairchild! Students will explore, observe, and sketch on location throughout the grounds of the Garden and then return to the studio to create beautiful botanical studies in graphite and watercolors of the lovely lotus and water lilies.

Flora and Fauna Life in Botanical Illustrations with Leo Hernandez

This new class is for both novices and experienced artists. Our experienced illustrator, Leo Hernandez, will guide students in the realistic representation of plants with an emphasis on combining them with other natural subjects such as wildlife.

Plant ID Workshop

Do you have a plant in your garden that you aren't familiar with? Or, perhaps are looking to find out its origins and how it came to South Florida? If so, bring your specimen to Fairchild’s Herbarium and let our scientists uncover its secrets! Bring a cutting from your plant to Fairchild’s Herbarium team on the first Friday of every month at 1:00 p.m. and participate in our Plant Identification Workshop.

Fairchild Artists in Bloom Gallery Show and Sale

Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden will host its Annual Fairchild Artists in Bloom Exhibition and Sale. The Garden House will transform into a gallery featuring more than 150 original works from more than 50 artists and Fairchild art instructors. The exhibition will showcase botanically themed works in watercolor, oil and acrylic paintings, pastels, and illustrations.

TECHNIQUES IN PREPARING FLORIDA SNAPPER

Let Chef Chris teach you the basics so that you can make the most of our local fresh fish. He will start with how to select the perfect catch, filleting and last but not least, cooking the fish. He will prepare the fish using a traditional technique like fish in a bag and add a special Asian twist by using sticky rice and Asian vegetables. This fresh and healthy meal will be enjoyed by the entire family.
