Party from Cayes Botanic Garden visits Fairchild

William Cinea (Founder of the Garden and Director of the Research and Conservation Department) and Natacha Beaussejour (Garden Manager), from Cayes Botanic Garden, Haiti, visited Fairchild between February 27 and March 2. They were hosted by our Herbarium Curator Brett Jestrow and by FIU Faculty, with appointment in Fairchild, Javier Francisco Ortega. During this visit, research progress pertinent to joint conservation and floristic projects in Haiti was discussed. FIU graduate students, hosted in the Garden, Nichole Tiernan and Jonathan Flickinger also discussed future field work in Haiti. One of the aims of this visit was to gain insights concerning horticulture developments for Cayes Botanic Garden to mitigate the severe damages caused by Hurricane Mathew. Our Living Collection Manager Chad Husby provided insights regarding main commercial nurseries and horticulture suppliers in the Miami/Homestead area. During their visit to Florida, this party also have discussions for collaborations with our colleagues from Montgomery Botanical Center and Naples Botanic Garden.
