INTRODUCTION TO PHOTO ENCAUSTIC HOT WAX PAINTING

INTRODUCTION TO PHOTO ENCAUSTIC HOT WAX PAINTING

Classes at Fairchild

When: Thursday, October 25, 2018 10:00 AM to Thursday, October 25, 2018 2:00 PM

Instructor: Andrea Clement

This workshop will teach you how to take your photographs to a new creative level with the ancient art of encaustics. Encaustics is a mixed media technique that involves using a heated beeswax medium which is applied to a surface (here a mounted photograph) and then other materials such as paint, ground pigments and collaged elements are incorporated upon and within the wax. This two day workshop is open to novice and experienced artists, as well as those who just want to try something different with their photos. Participants will have a hands on introduction to the techniques of photo encaustic such as guidance towards the types of images that work best for encaustic, how to mount images to a wooden substrate, incorporating images within an encaustic piece using tissue paper, creating and building up smooth translucent layers of wax, fusing, creating texture, incising lines, embedding objects and flattened flowers, application of paints, oil pastels, and pigments. Participants will take home two encaustic pieces that they have created from their own photographs. Students are asked to bring at least three black and white photographs printed on photo copier paper to the workshop. All other supplies will be provided for a fee of $40 payable to the instructor on the first day of the workshop.
