Our Jade Vine is Blooming!

Mon, Mar 23, 2009 at 11:22:20 AM

Once again, the time has come for our beautiful jade vine, Strongylodon macrobotrys, to begin flowering.  This marvelous vine is native to the Philippines.  The amazing jade hue, blue-green flowers are produced in pendant clusters up to 3 feet long!  It is growing on Fairchild's vine pergola.  The jade vine should be blooming for the next few weeks.

The blog is a great idea, especially letting us know in timely fashion what is blooming.

I have a 3 year old Jade Vine in Flauderdale. It has grown to the top of a live Oak (35 feet or so) but it has not flowered. Do you have any tips on getting it to flower?

have you tried adding coffee grounds to the soil? it's supposed to flower if the soil is a little acidic.

Good news, I see 4 sprigs starting to show some flower buds just this weekend. I guess it just takes a few years to get established. I will try to add some acid thanks for the tip.

toptropicals sells them online along with ebay every now and then. And it normaly blooms 5-6 years from seed if your lucky. Toptropicals is currently selling the red, black, pick, and the cyan blue one pictured above. The plants from them are all 3 gallon pots and are the biggest you will find them for sale. many, many feet long already. They should flower 2-3 years from planting at your house if cared for correctly.
