If so, bring your specimen to Fairchild’s Herbarium and let our scientists uncover its secrets! Bring a cutting from your plant to Fairchild’s Herbarium team on the first Friday of every month at 1:00 p.m. and participate in our Plant Identification Workshop.

This class for the beginner and advanced student focuses on the representation of tropical plants in watercolor and graphite. Students draw and paint using fresh plant material collected at Fairchild (provided).  Combining traditional botanical illustration techniques and contemporary interpretations of flora, this class encourages expressive freedom while honoring the beauty inherent in its plant subjects. Basic instruction in watercolor will be given as well as advanced. Join us for lively discussions and exchange of ideas on materials, techniques and composition.

PHOTOGRAPHING THE GARDEN AT SUNSET AND MOONRISE

Here is your chance to photograph Fairchild during that magic hour of sunset as it highlights the winter evening sky. This class affords you the opportunity to benefit from an expert’s instruction in photographing the Garden just as the moon is rising. A very sturdy tripod and a camera with interchangeable lenses or a point-and-shoot camera with close-up settings and user-adjustable settings are strongly recommended. This class is limited to 12 participants, 18 years and older.

If you have always wanted to try watercolor painting but thought it looked too difficult, this is the class for you. This class will explore the many facets of watercolor in a fun and relaxing way. As a beginner, the first two classes are mandatory since basic instruction will be given which will be the foundation for your success in watercolor painting. The class focuses on the principles and elements of design and offers instruction in the various techniques. Students will be encouraged to work at their own pace to develop their unique, creative style.
