Gardens of Miami, presented by the Villagers
Through more than 400 full-color photographs, lively garden stories and captions, ‘The Villagers Present Gardens of Miami’ is an idea book – a wish book - that promotes the advancement, expansion and recognition of the practice of landscape architecture by Florida licensed landscape architects, designers and amateurs within the unique ecoregion of Miami-Dade County.
27 exceptional and previously unpublished gardens serve as inspiration to others who live and practice under challenging environmental conditions. The book is the result of an intensive collaborative effort over a two-year period, by a small group of landscape architects, Villagers club members, gardeners, writers, editors, and a prolific photographer and book designer. The project also celebrates and supports a 50-year old philanthropic organization, The Villagers of Miami-Dade County, which is dedicated to preserving historic landscapes and buildings through grants and scholarships.
Steven Brooke won the Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome and the National AIA Honor Award. He has photographed over 40 books on architecture and design, nine of which he has also written. He is on the faculty of the University of Miami’s School of Architecture.
Joanna Lombard is a professor in the University of Miami’s School of Architecture. A graduate of Tulane and Harvard, she is a registered architect with a consulting practice in healthcare design, urbanism and architecture. Her numerous publications include Great Houses of Florida (Rizzoli).
Elaine Mills is a registered landscape architect and writer. Her practice has included preservation of Frederick Law Olmsted, Sr.’s historic “museum of botany and dendrology” at the Lawrenceville School in New Jersey; and narrating and conserving the native landscapes of Florida and the Caribbean.
Julie Petrella Arch is a University of Florida Master Gardener, horticulturist, landscape design consultant and frequent lecturer. She is the Director of the Edible Community Gardens Project and the Vice Chair of the City of Coral Gables Green Task Force.
