Artistic Flower Macro Photography

Learn to capture the best of what’s in bloom at the Garden. This class will review the best camera settings to create different interpretative flower images in the garden. It will teach shallow focus and hyper focal techniques to create botanical art of the flora at Fairchild. Different lighting techniques to produce dramatic images will be used and there will be a review of the work of famous flower photographers, while exploring their different techniques. Time in the field will be used to learn how to manage the subject, use the correct approach and effectively compose the image.

Gone are the days of lugging your heavy notebook on trips in order to be able to process images so that you can post on social networks or email photos to friends, family or colleagues. Learn how to process photos shot with any camera on your iPad or iPhone with mobile apps making for a creative workflow that will inspire and excite. Today most new DSLR and Point and Shoot cameras are capable of transferring photos directly to your iPhone and iPad wirelessly. You can also move those images from your camera with a SD card reader that directly connects to an iPhone or iPad.

Grafting Tropical Fruit Trees (at Fairchild Farm)

The three hour class will be spent in a practical session of the whip and tongue grafting technique; a challenge to master but has one of the highest rate of success. The art of grafting is a fascinating subject to learn. Dr. Ledesma, Fairchild curator of tropical fruit, will show participants the process of growing rootstock, to nursery beds and finally in established orchards. You’ll then practice and graft an avocado. Please bring your own grafting knife and wear comfortable clothing. This class takes place at the Fairchild Farm, located in Homestead. Directions will be sent to registered students.

Close Up Action Photography: Fast Moving Beauties in Nature

Learn how to photograph the beauties in nature while they are in action. From Hummingbirds and warblers to dragonflies and butterflies, this class will focus on the small and fast moving beauties in nature and the best photo techniques to capture these fast and elusive subjects. In this class, instructor Pedro Lastra will cover the needed camera/lens and the technical settings needed to capture fast moving small subjects in an artistic way. He will also review basic concepts of effective composition and strategies for anticipating action images of small subjects. This class will not cover basic camera operations; therefore students should be familiar with their camera’s basic exposure and focus controls. Telephoto lenses and telephoto zooms are highly recommended. A telephoto or zoom lens of at least 200mm is needed. Telephoto lenses that get to 300mm and 400mm will work best.

Photographing the Garden at Sunset and Moonrise

Here is your chance to photograph Fairchild during that magic hour of sunset as it highlights the winter evening sky. This class affords you the opportunity to benefit from an expert’s instruction in photographing the Garden just as the moon is rising. A very sturdy tripod and a camera with interchangeable lenses or a point-and-shoot camera with close-up settings and user-adjustable settings are strongly recommended. This class is limited to 12 participants, 18 years and older. The class is not for beginners, therefore there will be no basic camera instruction given. It will involve a great deal of walking, so please wear comfortable shoes and clothing. Students should bring along insect repellant, a flashlight and water. Class takes place even if it rains.

Bromeliads: Easy Tropicals for Your South Florida Garden

Learn the basics of growing these attractive, adaptable and colorful epiphytes.  While most often seen growing in the ground or on trees, they also do well in pots.  Our instructor/grower will take you through propagating pups, choosing the optimum growing medium and containers, watering and misting, providing air circulation and lighting, fertilizing and methods of combating pests. He will also share his experience in growing show plants.  Each student will have hands on experience repotting a bromeliad and take home a plant.
