BEGINNER’S FLOWER PAINTING WITH WATER-MIXABLE OILS

Mai’s class provides basic instruction in surface preparation, composition and color mixing. We will work with new water-mixable oils that are friendly to the environment and to you. They are genuine oil colors that can be thinned with water and cleaned with soap and water, thus avoiding the use of turpentine or harmful solvents. During this eight-week course you will unravel the mystery of flowers, discover their intricate details and learn to capture their colorful beauty on canvas. A NEW BEGINNING IN WATERCOLORS: ONLY THE BASICS

Get a taste of what you can do as a watercolor artist in this basic class. Have you always wanted to dabble in this classic art but didn’t want to invest a lot of money on supplies and paints? In this Wednesday morning class, Mr. Maddern will get you started in a world where you can express yourself through creative watercolor painting. With just six pigments, you can create a color palette of warm and cool primary colors. Once you learn how to mix these colors, the door will open to endless painting possibilities. This class, for both the beginner and advanced student, focuses on the representation of tropical plants in watercolor and graphite. Drawing from traditional botanical illustration techniques and contemporary interpretations of flora, this class encourages expressive freedom while still honoring the beauty inherent in its plant subjects. PAINTING FRUITS AND VEGETABLES USING PALETTE KNIVES

Creating an image with a palette knife is like sculpting with paints. In this class you will be mesmerized by the texture, movement and flow that can only be achieved using a palette knife. This unique painting technique will allow the beginner and more experienced artist to paint fruit and vegetables with a freedom and freshness previously thought impossible. Strokes of paint will seem to appear as if they were flowing directly out of your mind and heart. Ms. Yap will give basic instruction and frequent demonstrations on how to handle the different knives, mix colors and apply various techniques. Prepare yourself to have lots of fun in this fast paced, exhilarating class. Various fruits and vegetables will be on display for painting. THE SCULPTURES OF WILL RYMAN: EN PLEIN AIR PAINTING IN THE GARDEN

Join us for this unique class capturing the beauty of Fairchild, the nature inspired sculptures of Will Ryman and instruction in various painting media. The class will begin with discussion and demos in oils, acrylics and watercolor. We will draw and or/photograph in the Garden. Students may elect to paint onsite or paint from their photographs/drawings in the classroom. Some of the topics to be discussed include the pros and cons of each medium, their differences and similarities and the care and preservation of paintings. This class provides a great opportunity to explore new media in a two-day intensive class. Participants will have the opportunity to speak with Donna on Friday afternoon during a casual wine and cheese reception. Students may work in the drawing medium of their choice (graphite, charcoal, ink, colored pencils or a combination of media) and should come to class with a plan for a personal project and any supporting reference material such as photos, books, objects, etc. Class will take place indoors. IN LOVE WITH MONET: PAINTING WATER LILIES IN OILS, ACRYLICS OR WATER-MIXABLE OILS

Enchanting lighting, strong colors and freedom of brushstrokes…this workshop will transport you to Monet’s water gardens in Giverny. Your instructor, Mrs. Maida Yap Jimenez, will give you a brief introduction to Claude Monet’s work, which in turn will inspire you to create your own work of art. Become acquainted with the various techniques used by the early 20th century French impressionists that so vividly captured the endless and serene beauty of water lilies. The idea is not to paint water lilies the way they are, but to make a “passionate impressionistic merge” of the sky, land and water. You may take pictures of Fairchild’s lily ponds or bring in pictures of your favorite water lilies. YUPO: CREATING ABSTRACTS IN WATERCOLORS

Calling all watercolor artists! Do you want to loosen up and put your traditional watercolor paper aside? Come and join Lynda as she will let you s-t-r-e-t-c-h your creativity using both a process and surface that may be unfamiliar to you. Unlike paper, YUPO allows paint removal after drying – unwanted images are gone with a swipe. Expand your horizons and paint in a whole new manner. Abstract images will be encouraged, so a review of composition formats will precede the painting process. Fairchild will supply the YUPO. Our talented instructor will bring in her own YUPO abstracts to view and to inspire you with the endless possibilities that you can create. Supply list provided upon registration. PET PORTRAITS CAPTURED IN WATERCOLORS

Here is a lovely way to capture the character of your favorite pet in watercolors. Students will work from photographs of their pets as they are gently guided by our gifted instructor, artist David Maddern. He will teach the techniques of manipulating your paintbrush to create the shaggy dog with the cute shiny button nose or the silky kitten with bright green eyes. Whichever kind of pet you choose to paint, the end masterpiece will be a wonderful way to show your “love and devotion” to YOUR best friend, who will only critique you with a bark, a meow or chirp. What a great way to honor your loyal pet companion. Students must have basic knowledge of watercolors and will receive a detailed list of supplies required for this class.

DESIGNING, CREATING AND PAINTING UNIQUE SILK SCARVES

Back by popular demand! Let’s have fun FASHIONISTAS as we learn how to design and create one-of-a-kind silk scarves that embrace the abundance of colors found in the Garden. In this two-day workshop you’ll have the opportunity to create two unique fashion accessories that demonstrate your creativity and flair, as well as your love of nature. Learn how to use various dyes, paints and other materials as you sponge, spray or paint your wearable artwork. You can even sprinkle salt on your creation to add texture to the design and embellish it with iridescent paint sticks, and use copper tjaps (stamps) and forms for rubbings. Fairchild will provide the supplies for two 11” x 60” scarves, while you provide the inspiration during these two days of fun. Supply list provided upon registration.

In this workshop, instructorMai Yap Jimenezwill give you a brief introduction to the life of one ofAmerica’s most beloved artists. Startling in their sensuality, O’Keeffe’s flowers created a new language through which she expressed deep emotions, which in turn will inspire you to feel the same while creating your own masterpiece. You will become acquainted with various techniques used by artists that shaped the beginnings of Modern Art. The idea is not to paint an exact replica of flowers, but to portray the passion, power and emotion that emanate from them. Fresh flowers will be provided. BOTANICAL ILLUSTRATION IN WATERCOLORS: A WORKSHOP FEATURING HERBS

This workshop, created with both the beginner and advanced student in mind, will focus on the accurate representation of herbs. Throughout time we have used herbs for medicine, health and beauty. Herb painting has a long history in botanical art, spanning back 2000 years. Learn the basics of botanical illustration, and draw and/or paint a variety of herbs (provided). Basic instruction in watercolor will be provided, however students may elect to work only on pencil drawings if preferred. Participants are encouraged to bring their botanical artworks to the workshop for discussion and critique. Materials list will be provided upon registration.

TRANSPARENT WATERCOLORS – A STUDIO WORKSHOP

Accomplished instructor, Dottie Greene, will lead a small group of students as they take watercolor painting to a new level with the understanding of color and light. Using transparent watercolor as the medium and working with a limited palette, students will distinguish the behavioral differences of pigments and explore the nuances of color while painting white objects. Participants should come to class with supporting reference materials of white objects (student photos that include some white objects, white flowers, etc.).
