Well summer has arrived along with all those gardening projects that you promised to get started on. So, why not get out of the heat and the rain and into one of our air-conditioned classrooms for some of our terrific horticulture classes. Isn’t it time to learn about tropical trees, container palms, sparkling backyard ponds, proper pruning techniques or common sense building materials for landscaping? Before you know it, it will be time to get your vegetable and tomato gardens ready, so why not arm yourself with great ideas and proper practices for achieving that healthy garden. Our knowledgeable instructors are eager to help you on your way.
If you would rather study art, and have made a promise to yourself that this is the summer that you are going to get started, we have some fun and unique offerings for you to consider. If you have been lured by the Victorian era, perhaps you would like to try “copperplate” calligraphy using the “pointed pen”. Or why not experience the wonder of manipulating a single piece of paper into a complete keepsake journal? Maybe it’s time for you to try your hand at designing a silk scarf or summer hat. Come join in the fun as you discover your creative side.
And we haven’t forgotten the photographers. You will have the opportunity to learn how to use the latest SLR, DSLR and Mirrorless System Camera (MSC) in the comfort of our air-conditioned classrooms. Then, armed with your new skills, you can join the rest of your class as you capture the beauty of flowering plants, birds, butterflies, sunrises and sunsets, or maybe the haunting, autumnal Hunter’s Moon. If photographing birds is your passion, there are several classes that will help you hone your skills in pursuit of your feathered subjects. And we even have a new photography class for kids! All you grown ups better step aside, soon there will be new photographers in town! And having learned how to take creative photos, be prepared to be wowed by their portfolios.
Want to be as smart as your Smartphone? Well, our newest class section, iTechnology, is filled with classes for all of you who own an iPhone (4/4S) or an iPad2 (or 3). We know your lives are busy, and these classes will help you better understand all the tasks that these devices can handle that will make your lives a little easier.
And our very popular iPhoneography classes are back. Since we introduced these classes last year, the Garden has been filled with students taking photos with their iPhones and then sharing them on iFoto Fairchild. Or, why not get a jump on your holiday gifts and make a personalized, one-of-a-kind calendar using your own photos?
And food – we have to eat this summer! The King of Fruit, The Mango, will be celebrated (and eaten!) in our “jamming and chutney” classes in June and July. Summer cooking can be fun for the entire family – barbecue, burgers, tofu, vegetarian soups, organic dishes, sauces and simple desserts – there’s something for everyone. Maybe your palette would like to “travel” toIndia,Korea, orJapan– where making sushi will be a family affair.
And, of course, we have crafts! Learn how to weave beads in a number of different ways, or try using copper to design and make an original fibula (broach). Recycle your old or “orphaned” pieces of jewelry into new works of art, or learn how to wire wrap or weave chain. What great gifts you can make - if you can bear to part with them, that is!
And we don’t want to spend all of our time indoors. This summer, why not make lasting memories as a family by sleeping outside under the stars during our Night Owl Camp? Here you will have an opportunity to prowl the Garden looking for owls and bats and bugs. Check out our Family Fun section for great classes for children of all ages.
So grab a glass of lemonade, put your feet up, and take a careful look at our newest class offerings. We think you will find lots to like.
Stay cool, and we look forward to seeing you in class!
