In celebration of one of the world's splendid heritage sites, Everglades National Park, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is hosting 

Everglades Day

Sunday, April 5, 2009 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 

Come join us for this family fun educational event, where you can see the intrepid Python Pete and a Burmese python, hear stimulating public lectures on conservation and natural history and learn about activities by non-for-profit organizations in support of Everglades National Park. 

Featured speakers and topics from Everglades National Park biologists are: 

  • Bob Johnson discussing  "Everglades Hydrology 101"
  • Dave Hallac discussing "Propeller scarring of seagrass in Florida Bay"
  • Maya Vaidtya describing "Fire ecology in Everglades National Park"
  • Mark Parry covering "Monitoring Reproductive Trends of the American Alligator in Everglades National Park"
  • Bill Perry describing "Fishery monitoring in Florida Bay, Everglades National Park"
  • Jordan Barr discussing "Mangroves - storytellers of disturbance and climate change" 
  • The endangered Florida panther in Everglades National Park. 

Fairchild's conservation ecologist Joyce Maschinski  will discuss: 

 "Collecting Seeds to Save the Park's Rarest Species: A Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, Center for Plant Conservation and Everglades National Park Collaborative project," and  

"The many facets of Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden's South Florida Conservation Program."   

The Friends of the Everglades will have their Founders Day Celebration in the Garden House.

Join us and enjoy Everglades delicacies like swamp cabbage and frogs legs and bluegrass music.
