January 30, 2014

  • Dr. David Lee, Emeritus Professor at Florida International University and Specialist in Tropical Botany.
  • Food, Nature and Gardens: David Fairchild's Legacy
  • In this 75th anniversary year of the founding of Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, it is fitting to remember the garden's namesake, Dr. David Grandison Fairchild, for the Garden's activities today very much commemorate Fairchild's principal activities as a professional plant scientist and individual. Dr. Lee will illustrate those aspects of his life with selections from his writings, included in a book compiled and commented upon by Dr. Lee, The World As Garden. The Writings and Life of David Fairchild. This book will be on sale and available for signing by Dr. Lee.

Dr. David Lee is an Emeritus Professor at Florida International University, where he taught for 30 years until his retirement at the end of 2009.  A specialist in tropical botany and the nature and function of plant color, he is the author of Nature's Palette. The Science of Plant Color (University of Chicago Press, 2007) and Wayside Trees of Tropical Florida (Tellus Books, 2011).  Those books will also be on sale  and available for signing by the author. He is presently finishing another book tentatively titled Nature's Fabric. The Science of Leaves.  Dr. Lee was the initiator of the successful collaboration between FTBG and FIU, begun in 1988, and was also the Director of The Kampong 2007-2008.

Admission is free for Fairchild Members and children 5 and younger.
Non-members: $25 for adults, $18 for seniors 65 and up and $12 for children 6-17.
