Spring birds continue with woodpeckers and owls

Thursday, April 10, 2014

The springtime bird business is continuing here in the Garden. The cardinals are still singing for mates, and more recently a dead palm tree trunk has been playing host to a nest of red-bellied woodpeckers (Melanerpes carolinus) and eastern screech owls (Megascops asio). The owls have an apartment higher up in the palm trunk than the woodpeckers, which is just as well since the woodpecker hatchlings are noisy!

A curious immature eastern screech owl seemed intrigued by my camera.
