My colleague Arielle hipped me to the presence of monarch butterfly chrysalises in the Garden. I naturally forgot to look for them, but happily stumbled upon them while looking for something else entirely. There are dozens here in the Garden; all that I saw were hanging from underneath bromeliad leaves. They look like pale emerald-green gems wrapped in gold wire. I really wonder why there's a gold and black metallic band around the top, along with gold metallic spots towards the bottom. What does this signal to potential predators, if anything?
