Prof. Eugenio Santiago, director of the herbarium of the Botanic Garden of San Juan de Puerto Rico and faculty member of the Department of Biology of the University of Puerto Rico at Rio Piedras is visiting the Garden between November 7 and 21. Prof. Santiago is being hosted by FIU-Fairchild faculty Prof. Javier Francisco-Ortega. The visit is being jointly sponsored by FIU-ICTB and the Garden and aimed to discuss joint projects on botanical history of the Caribbean Islands and to plan future field work in Puerto Rico focusing on phylogenetics and taxonomy of Critically Endangered endemic species of Eugenia (Myrtaceae). Graduate research of Jonathan Flickinger has species of Eugenia endemic in the Caribbean Islands as a primary objective. Field work in Puerto Rico will be supported by a graduate grant from the Botanical Society of America.
